Terelle

Progetto Finanziato dall'Unione Europea

The inhabited centre of Terelle was born and gradually grew up around the castle that Lando, Count of Aquino, built because of the ongoing battle against Montecassino near the forest known as Tyrella, on the eastern slope of Mount Cairo.

The most reliable date of foundation of the castle is the year 1117.

At the entrance to Terelle is one of the natural resources of the entire province: a marvellous centuries-old chestnut grove, declared 'monumental', the pride of the town and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the whole of Lazio.

The longest chestnut tree is 800 years old and has a circumference of 12 metres.

Above the village there is the selva, a large beech wood that can be easily crossed thanks to the paths. Near the forest there are wells where the inhabitants once drew water and the snow ditch, a natural cavity.

From "Le Casermette", a refuge, it is possible to reach the 1669-metre-high peak of Mount Cairo, which offers a wide panorama.

In Terelle, in addition to other interesting places to visit, the Napoleonic Cemetery is worthy of note, testifying to the changes that took place in the social context of the time.
