"For our and your freedom, we Polish soldiers gave our souls to God, our bodies to the land of Italy, our hearts to Poland."

The cemetery was built by soldiers of the Second Corps, with the help of Italian masons, between the autumn of 1944 and the autumn of 1946 with the technical direction of the engineer Tadeusz Muszyński based on a project by architects Waclaw Hryniewicz and Jerzy Skolimowski.

The cemetery houses the graves of 1072 soldiers of the Second Army Corps, which was mostly made up of Polish units, but also included Belarusians and Ukrainians, who died during the Battle of Monte Cassino between January and May 1944.
