German military memorial

Progetto Finanziato dall'Unione Europea

Work on the construction of this shrine began in 1959, under the supervision of the architect Robert Tischler and was completed by his successor Gerd Offenberg.

Nature and architectural elements have the same symbolic weight. The presence of trees that recall the Heldenhaine, the woods of the ancient heroes, is a reference to the importance of the forest in the Germanic tradition and to the connection with the natural element.

20,182 German soldiers rest in peace in the shade of the trees. The tombs are organized to form ascending terraces divided into blocks which, following the morphology of the ground, converge towards the large 11 meter high bronze cross.
