Chiesa Madre Concattedrale

Progetto Finanziato dall'Unione Europea

The foundation stone was laid in 1973 to a design by engineer Ignazio Breccia Fratadocchi.  It is clearly a modern, post-war construction, built because the ancient glorious Chiesa Colleggiata di S. Germano, Mother Church of Cassino, was destroyed by heavy bombing.

Today the Mother Church is dedicated to Maria SS.ma Assunta, SS. Salvatore and S. Germano Vescovo.

The church has a load-bearing structure in reinforced concrete, the roof and the dome are made of copper mantolamine, while the interior is covered with shaped concrete panels.

The two polychrome side windows depict the martyrdom of St Bertarius and the death of St Germano, while the large mosaic of the Crucifixion behind the altar was made in 1976 by Father Ambrogio Fumagalli.

In the church there is an ancient wooden statue of Our Lady of the Assumption, for which the people of Cassino have a centuries-old veneration. The statue, of which there is no precise information, is linked to some prodigious events linked to the plague of 1837 and the cholera of 1882. Buried in the rubble of the destruction, it was found intact thanks to the faith and tenacity of Don Francesco Varone and a few daring people who found it by digging through the rubble.
