Chiesa di San Pietro

Progetto Finanziato dall'Unione Europea

The Church of St Peter stands on the site of the Roman city of Casinum, where a church built from a pagan temple had been dedicated to the Apostle Peter in the mid-eighth century.

Construction of the present church began in 1952 with the laying of the foundation stone by Abbot Ildefonso Rea, and it was consecrated by the same Abbot on 14 March 1954.

Inspired by the neoclassical style, it gives the feeling of being in an essential place, a place for prayer and contemplation.

The apse houses a fresco by Giovanni Bizzoni depicting the handing over of the keys to Saint Peter.

The rose window on the façade conceptually represents the reality of God in the Trinity of the Divine Persons: the Father, creator of the universe, the Son, saviour of the world through his Cross, the Holy Spirit, love descending on believers in the corporeal form of a dove.

The exterior of the building is clad in red bricks that highlight the travertine cornices.

To the left of the church is the baptistery, to the right is the bell tower in its entirety.
