Belmonte Castello

The village, the summit of the renowned Mount Morrone, is located in the Valle di Clia, a narrow valley that connects the Comino valley with the Cassinate area, the historic centre is perched on the top of a hill.

The name originates from the Latin bellus mons to which the term Castello was added in 1862.

Below the village flows the Rio Secco, a right-hand tributary of the Rapido river.

The territory was traditionally Samnite, then Roman until the fall of the empire, and in the early Middle Ages it followed the fate of the Principality of Capua.

Archaeological remains of the Roman aqueduct have been found in Costa Campopiano. The municipal territory is the place of production of some wines regulated by the Atina DOC specification.
